Every garden is unique, and having the right information makes all the difference.

Gardening comes with lots of questions, and that’s part of the fun if you ask us here at Deep Roots Natives. Whether you’re planning your first garden or fine-tuning a well-established landscape, our FAQs are here to help. Below are our answers to common questions about our plants, products, and services, so you can shop and grow with confidence.

What makes your garden center different from others?

We’re not a big-box retailer – we specialize in plants that are native to the Southeastern United States and the Mid-Atlantic. We help our customers improve ecosystem diversity and practice restorative gardening by offering a selection of plants that are naturally suited to our local climate, soil, and wildlife. Native plants, trees, and shrubs often require less maintenance long-term, and help to build a more biodiverse ecosystem in your yard (and the neighborhood!)

Where are you located?

Our garden center is located at 3666 Guess Road, Durham, NC 27705. We welcome visitors who want to shop, talk gardening with our pros, or who are interested in viewing our wide range of native trees, shrubs, and perennials.

What are your normal business hours?

Our hours can vary depending on the season, but our most current operational hours are always listed on our website and on Google Maps. Please note that sometimes our hours change due to inclement weather, so if you are visiting us from far away, we encourage you to call us before you head out or check our Facebook page for updates.

Do you offer landscape design services?

We are proud to offer scheduled landscape design consultations for our customers who want a cohesive design but want to do the planting themselves. During your consultation, you’ll meet with one of our professional designers at the nursery, and you’ll have the chance to discuss your vision or goals and create a plan for your outdoor space. This by-appointment service allows you to bring a rough sketch of your property, along with information about the amount of sunlight, soil conditions, existing plantings, and what you’re hoping to achieve. If you would like more comprehensive garden design and installation services, we recommend contacting our sister company, Garden Environments.

Do you have any certifications or recognition?

We are proud to be the only native plant retailer in the Piedmont area that comes highly recommended by the North Carolina Native Plant Society and the New Hope Audubon Society.

Can you help me order plants if you do not have them in stock?

Absolutely! We stock hundreds of plants, but if you’re looking for something that we don’t currently have, we’re happy to reach out to our expansive network of trusted growing partners to try and source plants for you.

Do you work with professional landscapers or just residential clients?

We cater to both homeowners and landscape professionals, offering great pricing and high-quality native stock that is suitable for large-scale environmental restoration or commercial installations, as well as home gardens. For our commercial clients, we are able to offer wholesale pricing to those who are able to provide business credentials.

How do I contact you if I have questions?

You can reach our nursery by calling (984) 329-7412, or you can fill out a contact form on our website. Our team is happy to help and will reach out to you shortly after receiving your request.

What types of native plants do you keep in your inventory?

You can find a wide range of native perennials, grasses, shrubs, trees, and sedges in our nursery. Our focus is on stocking plants that provide the most ecological benefits to our region.

Do you sell pollinator-friendly or attracting plants?

Yes, and a large part of our inventory is dedicated to helping pollinators. We can help you find plants to help attract butterflies, including specific plant species that support Monarch populations, as well as nectar sources for hummingbirds, native bees, and other local pollinators.

How do I know what plants are right for the soil/sun conditions at my property?

We have seasoned staff who are delighted to talk with you about local flora and what would grow well at your unique property. Come prepared to discuss details like shade/sun, slope, soil type, and more, and we can recommend species that will thrive in those conditions.

Can I use native plants to help resolve drainage problems at my property?

Yes, we can recommend specific native plants for rain gardens or bioswales that help absorb excess runoff and prevent issues with erosion. These plants can help turn what was once a problem area into a beautiful, functional part of your landscape.

Do I need to water native plants?

Native plants are adapted to our climate, but they do occasionally require watering, especially during their first year as they establish roots. Once the plants are established, they will require less frequent watering than traditional ornamental plants.

I have invasive plants — do you offer tips or advice for removing them?

We offer a variety of educational programs, including sessions on removing non-native or invasive plants and replacing them with native options.

I’m new to gardening — do you provide maintenance services while my plants get established?

We are a retail nursery and design house, but our staff is happy to chat with you and offer detailed care instructions before you leave with your new plants. If you ever have questions, feel free to call or stop by and attend one of our educational workshops to get troubleshooting tips. Our social events calendar outlines all upcoming events at our garden center.

Do you carry supplies other than plants?

Yes, we also offer high-quality gardening supplies and branded merchandise in the shop!

Do you host educational events?

Yes, we’re proud to host all kinds of educational events for locals, as well as speakers who specialize in native plants and conservation. We keep this information up to date on our Facebook page – you don’t need to have a Facebook account to see this information! We post here about our upcoming community speaker series, some of which are free to the public.

What is the “Native Garden Tour”?

Occasionally, we offer small, scheduled tours in our area to showcase local gardens that highlight native species. This is a great way to see in person what mature native plants look like in a residential setting and get ideas for your own gardens. Fees vary, and pre-registration is required.
