Are you looking for a striking, unusual addition to your garden? A shade tolerant groundcover that still provides a splash of color during the spring to summer transition? Look no further, here is Sisyrinchium angustifolium, also known as blue-eyed grass!
Despite their common name, the Blue-eyed Grasses are not grasses at all but rather members of the Iris family. It forms a clump of narrow, blue-green leaves 12″ tall and wide that looks for all the world like an ornamental Grass, then over a long period running from late spring to mid-summer, it blankets itself with starry, lavender-blue flowers. It makes a fantastic edging, especially along a walk or a terrace.
If you are looking for a groundcover that will work well in partial shade underneath larger plants and shrubs, they handle competition quite well and readily spread via underground rhizomes. Plants flower best in full sun but also put on a good show in partial shade, and though the species is generally found in moist locations, they`re not super picky about soil.
We currently have a large number of gallon pots of the ‘Blue Note’ cultivar of blue-eyed grass, $13 each, feel free to come on by the nursery and check them out in the shadehouse!
Open Tue-Fri 8am-6pm and Sat-Sun 9am-6pm.

Tubelings are young seedling trees or bushes that are grown rapidly in a greenhouse in plug containers, and at the age of 3 months they are as big and strong as field-grown plants a year old. Tubelings have wall established root systems and for best results they should be planted directly in their permanent location.
We currently have the following plants available as tubelings, $8.99:
Salix nigra (Black Willow)
Salix sericea (Silky Willow)
Chamaecyparis thyiodes (Atlantic White Cedar)
Euonymus americanus (Hearts-a-bustin / Strawberry Bush)

Illicium is a flowering plant genus in the Schisandraceae (Star Anise) family. There are several varieties native to the Southeastern United States. Most are understory evergreen to semi-evergreen shrubs to small trees. The crushed leaves, stems, and seeds have an anise spice fragrance.
Most prefer part shade to shade, but some varieties will tolerate more sun if given enough moisture. They tolerate loam or sandy soils that are moist to wet with a neutral or acid PH.
Use as a showy specimen in the dappled shade at the back of your yard, as a hedge, or along ponds and streams in a naturalized or woodland garden. Illicium is resistant to deer browsing.
We usually carry the following varieties:
☀️`Florida Sunshine`- Electric lime-green leaves during spring and summer, and as the weather cools in fall, the leaf color brightens to screaming yellow, then becomes a near parchment color by midwinter.
5`-8` tall & 3`-4` wide when fully mature.
🍌BananAppeal: Dwarf variety, very similar in look and growth habits to the Florida Sunshine but much smaller!
3`-4` tall and wide
🌷`Pink Frost`- Has lovely variegated white and green foliage that turns rosy pink in cold weather. Maroon-red flowers bloom in spring.
6’-10’ tall & wide
🌳`Forest Green` - Upright-rounded evergreen shrub with glossy, olive green foliage that has a pleasant fragrance. The flowers are insignificant but are followed by the non-edible star-shaped seed capsules that have a licorice scent.
8’-12’ tall & 6’-8’ wide
🪷`Woodland Ruby` - Large, vibrant purple-red to rose-pink flowers from spring into fall. Evergreen glossy green leaves make it an excellent choice as a specimen or a hedge in shade or part shade.
6’-8’ tall & wide
🌸`Star Flower Orion` - The large, pale white flowers bloom multiple times throughout the year and the shrub is compact in shape and size.
3’-5’ tall & wide
🌱Straight species (Illicium parviflorum) - It has a vigorous growth rate, is easy to grow, and blooms from May to June. It does not change color in the fall.
15’-20’ tall & 10’-15’ wide

This week`s #SaturdayStaffFavorite is our `Ruby Spice` Clethera!
Also known as “Sweet Pepperbush” or “Summersweet”, Clethera is one of our favorite late flowering deer-resistant shrubs.
🌺When its fragrant dark pink flowers appear in June to August and its scent drifts through your garden on a hot summer night, you`ll understand why! It’s incredibly fragrant, so much so that you won’t believe how much these shrubs can perfume your entire garden, with notes hinting of honeysuckle, rose, clove, and heliotrope. It blooms on new wood, and during the summer it has a long bloom time that the pollinators absolutely love!
🍂While in autumn, the leaves turn a beautiful deep gold and the flowers turn into seeds that the birds rely on as a fall food source. After its leaves drop, the seed pods and beautiful bark provide winter interest. Its great as a backdrop in perennial borders or for difficult spots in your garden that`s a little shady and wet! We love this because it blooms in shady locations in late summer, when very few other shrubs are in bloom!
🌱 It has a compact growth habit, getting 4-6’ tall and 3-4’ wide and wants shady, moist, acidic soil with organic material. It tolerates full sun to part shade, but won’t tolerate a hot/dry site. Once mature it can handle short periods of drought/flooding.
